"You’ve traveled the world and met many different people. Your spirit was strengthened by your experiences...and it will fuel a brand new world. I’m confident that you’ll nurture this land...and raise a beautiful world."
—Shurelia—

Shurelia (シュレリア, shureria?, lit. "Syureria") is one of the heroines of the first Ar tonelico game, Melody of Elemia. She is the Administrator of the First Tower and the leader of the Knights of Elemia. As her direct subordinate, Lyner both admires and respects her. Although it is well-known that she is a Reyvateil, and a very powerful one at that, the identity of her Reyvateil type is left as a mystery for most of the game.

Though she looks cold at first, Shurelia is actually very shy and hides her emotions. Because of tragic incidents that happened to Shurelia in the past, she now has a firm belief that feelings and emotions will only get in the way of one's own duty. Though extremely serious and no-nonsense as her role demands, she later reveals to be desperate in her longing to gain some sort of freedom and have a more ordinary, enjoyable life.

Shurelia's Story[]

Origins and Life Before Ar tonelico: Melody of Elemia[]

Shurelia ln

Shurelia as a child.

Shurelia is in fact a Reyvateil Origin, and the very first Reyvateil created in the world. The reason of the changing of her name is that her adoptive father, Eleno, had a daughter called Shurelia. However, the real Shurelia was killed in a security failure during the war between Sol Ciel and Sol Cluster some years before Eoria's birth, and after she was born, Eleno saw his daughter in Eoria. Because of that, he kept on calling Shurelia by the name of his dead daughter, Shurelia, eventually got so used to the name that she took it for herself. Eleno was also the person responsible for connecting Eoria/Shurelia to the Tower and appointing her as the Administrator. However, for that, she had to constantly undergo through various extremely painful Install processes, where Eleno had to insert Parameno and Grathnode crystals in her body to connect her to the Tower. However, Eleno showed her the object that was the key for the creation of the Tower, and that served as its power source: the Orgel of Origins. Shurelia liked the melody it played so much tthat Eleno gave her an orgel pendant as a present on her birthday, and even if it couldn't diminish the pain from the Installs, Shurelia said herself that she would do it for her beloved father.

However, just a few years later, the Grathnode Inferia catastrophe ensued, and Eleno died trying to regulate the power boosters of the Tower to reduce the damage from the burst of magical power. During this time, Shurelia was secluded in a special chamber of the Tower called the Parameno Room, singing to try to reduce the damage to the Tower, despite the unbearable pain she was feeling. Once things calmed down, she collapsed. Shurelia ended up being very sad once she knew about Eleno's death, but she wasn't alone, given that Rovar, one of Eleno's direct subordinates stood by her side, and effectively turned into an older brother for her, and Neath, who was the direct subordinate for the president of Elemia, became her best friends. Shurelia ended up becoming part of the Elemia Supreme Council, where she spoke of her plans for the construction of a new sound science system, the Silver Horn, for the sake of the people, but in exchange, she made everyone promise that it, and sound science in general, would never be used for warfare again.

While she was busy with the building of the Silver Horn and its many subsystems, she also spent a lot of her time going to the Tail of Reminiscence, and dozing off while looking up to the Horn and the sky, trying in vain to calm her feelings for Neath, which were starting to swell up. One day, a Teru girl approached her asking for food, and after a while, they both were chatting and became friends. This Teru girl was Tastiella de Lu. Some time later, Rovar and Neath began to quarrel about the construction of an airport in the Tail of Reminiscence, going as far to suspend the construction temporarily. This affected Shurelia so negatively that she even stood silent when Neath departed on a journey around the world, from which he would never come back.

After the Silver Horn was completed, she was appointed as its controller, and also took control of the Reyvateils that were working on it. However, after this, things began to turn bad, since a lot of strange creatures began attacking the people and became a serious threat for everyone. As a response, Shurelia showed the people the method for creating the Pureblood β-type Reyvateils, and they defeated the strange creatures. This only made things worse afterwards, because humans began to mass-produce the β-type Reyvateils. Although there were cases where they were made with the aim of helping people, they were majorly being made for warfare, and under these conditions, the most powerful Reyvateil, the Pureblooded β-type Mir, was born.

This was a great offense to all the Reyvateils on Sol Ciel, and Shurelia took it as a betrayal. Shurelia was removed from the control of the Silver Horn, because humans were planning to install a control system in it and make Mir its controller, so they could completely control all of the Reyvateils in the world. However, soon after this, the emotions of Mir sprouted, and she began planning on how to get rid of her creators, and all of humankind. Once the time was right, Mir blocked off all the systems of the Silver Horn and began causing chaos in the information networks of the Tower through it. The people appealed to Shurelia, and she called for a meeting for trying to return the peace to the world. However, this was just a ruse, since the people seized Shurelia as soon as she entered in the place where the meeting was supposed to take place, and after that, they sent her to an investigation center to apply the same process they had applied to Mir to strip her from her emotions and will. Mir rescued Shurelia from that awful fate, but the measures she took for doing so were so extreme (killing everyone in the investigation center except for Shurelia, and dropping the half of the Wings of Horus into the Sea of Death), that Shurelia declared war against Mir.

However, Shurelia soon understood that she wouldn't be able to defeat Mir, given she was faster in her movements, and had much more power at her disposal. When Shurelia was about to give up, she remembered that Tastiella had offered her help to her, and she called Tastiella. Tastiella sang a song, trapping Mir inside of Grathnode Crystals, but Mir simply transferred her consciousness to the Binary Field of the Tower, turned it into a virus, and resumed her attacks. To counter this, Tastiella and Shurelia designed and built, with the help of the Teru Tribe, the Crescent Chronicle, though this ended requiring the sacrifice of Tastiella for establishing the program that would seal Mir's virus form (codenamed "Shadow"). However, this was insufficient, and they had to appoint the second most powerful Reyvateil in the world (after Mir), the Pureblooded β-type known as Lune to stop Mir. When she began singing Chronicle Key, Shadow stopped acting, and the world was safe again.

The betrayals that Shurelia experienced during the war and the loss of so many friends led her to the decision to not let herself feel any emotions again. Plus, how evil the people turned, the way they abused of the power of sounds and the Reyvateils, and the breaking of the promise they made were deciding factors for the final decision that Shurelia made after the war: she stripped the world away from the Hymmnos Extract songs, and completely banned the use of Sound Science in the world, as herself pleaded for it when the Covenant of Elemia was signed. However, she designed a new system called Grathmeld in order to compensate for that.

Some years before the start of the game, she also placed her trust in Lyner's father, Leard Barsett, and in Kyle Clancy, so much that she even gave the two of them he most important Hymn Crystals of the tower - the Linker and Re-Nation crystals.  At the time they were known as "The Three Magi" for their magnificent teamwork. However, Kyle betrayed that trust and tried to revive Mir. Because of that, Shurelia herself had to banish him from Platina, though he would later return and once more try to revive Mir.

Story in Ar tonelico: Melody of Elemia[]

At the start of the game, she discovers the virus ELMA-DS breaking out from the Symphonic Reactor, and together with the Knights of Elemia, Lyner Barsett and Ayatane Michitaka, she tried to stop it from destroying Platina. She tried to analyze it, and later on, combat the virus with Lyner and Ayatane backing her up, however, they had to retreat after the virus performed Flip-Flop Conversion, making it impervious to any of their attacks. As it was an emergency, Shurelia entrusted Lyner with the sealed airship and the task of going down to the Wings of Horus to retrieve the Hymn Crystal Purger, since that was the only thing capable of cancelling ELMA-DS's Flip-Flop Conversion. She then gave him a Brooch that projected a 3D image of the crystal to aid him in his search. After Lyner departed, she stayed in Platina to continue containing the viruses.

However, things ended badly when she noticed that the Mother Virus, Mir, is awake and plans to resume her plans to destroy mankind for the sake of making a perfect world only for Reyvateils, "Reyvateilia". As the first step in this plan, Mir sends an electrical discharge that causes one of the seven Hexagonal Plates to fall from the Musical Corridor, then knocks Shurelia unconscious.

Note: The story varies from here, depending on the choices the player makes in respect to the Purger crystal and the path chosen in Phase 2.

Aurica's Path[]

When Lyner finally returns with the Purger in his hands, Shurelia is containing ELMA-DS with the help of Ayatane and some other knights, but they retreat so Lyner and his party can take care of the virus. During the battle, the virus breaks into Aurica's mind, and Shurelia suggests that the entire party Dive to save her. In the middle of battling the virus which has taken over Aurica's mind, Shurelia connects to the Tower and intervenes in order to separate Aurica's consciousness from the viruses, then leaves the task of destroying them to Lyner.

Afterward, she asks for volunteers for the search party that would be going to search for Misha's lost song. Some of the candidates were Ayatane, Krusche and Lyner; Ayatane turned the offer down, since he wanted to continue protecting Shurelia, but Krusche, on the other hand agreed. Lyner, after considering it, refused the offer since he felt he was in debt to the Church of Elemia for the help they gave him in his search for the Purger crystal; after explaining the matter to Shurelia, she agreed to let Lyner work for the church until he felt that he had paid off his debt.

Later on, while doing a reconnaissance patrol with Ayatane, Shurelia encountered Lyner, Radolf, and Aurica, who were trying to find a way to help the people go to Firefly Alley, as the airships weren't traveling because of the storm that was brewing below the Wings of Horus. Shurelia then gave them the task of going up to the Musical Corridor to fix the Hexagonal Plates, since she had discovered that the cause of the storm was the plate that fell when Mir awakened. After doing this, she left to go back to the top of the Tower.

However, she had to intervene and fix the configuration of the corridor herself when viruses began to manifest through Aurica. She believed that Aurica probably had a hole in her mind barrier, and the viruses were using that hole to take her over. She suggested to Lyner that he should Dive into Aurica to find the root of the problem, then thanked everyone for their efforts.

Unfortunately, there was nothing she could do when Kyle Clancy later returned to Platina and almost succeeded in implanting Mir's soul in Aurica's body. Lyner, Radolf and Ayatane appeared and saved Aurica, and defeated Kyle after he was consumed by Mir's viruses.

After all of that, Lyner and all of his friends reunited in the Platina Grand Hall where Shurelia thanked them for their brave efforts in saving Platina and recovering the Chronicle Key, but then she tripped and fell. Confronted with concern, she told everyone that she was only tired and needed to rest, she then returned to the Rinkernator, her place of residence as the Administrator of the Tower.

However, while she was resting, Ayatane appeared, showing his true identity and intentions. He helped Mir to possess Shurelia's body and the viruses began pouring out of the Altar of Apostles once again. When Lyner and the others went to investigate, they found Shurelia abducting Leard, sending him to the Prism Garden area of the Tower for "knowing high level classified info".

When Lyner and the others finally managed to reach the S.P.U. the area of the Prism Garden, where the central processor of the Tower is stored, they found Leard and took him back to the Observatory to let him rest. There, Leard informed them that Shurelia was possessed by Mir, and the only way to get Mir out of Shurelia's body was using an item called the FFT Divider.

Lyner and the others recovered the FFT Divider from the core of the S.P.U. (Lyner almost dying because of the powerful shield that was guarding it), and Shurelia/Mir, not liking the situation, sent her ELMA-DS virus together with some brainwashed ELMAs to stop them. Lyner and the others defeated the virus and the brainwashed guardians, and continued climbing the Tower.

At the very top, they found Shurelia/Mir, preparing to wipe humankind from the face of Ar Ciel. Lyner tried to reason with her to stop fighting, but she only laughed at him and attacked him. After that, Aurica tried to use the FFT Divider to sever the control that Mir had over Shurelia, but Mir summoned a guardian in response and Lyner figured out that they would need to fight with her to use the FFT Divider.

After a grueling fight they finally managed to detach Mir from Shurelia's body, but Mir manifested as a monster. Lyner and the others fought and defeated her, but as Shurelia suspected, Mir revived, and when Mir said that she couldn't be killed unless the Tower was destroyed, Shurelia decided that it was time to use her last resort and suspend the Tower's functions. Asking Lyner to remember all the experiences he had while traveling the world, and to please watch over the world in her place, she began singing the Suspend hymn. Mir was shocked at her actions, and Lyner was as well once he understood what the purpose of the song was, but Shurelia's only response was saying that she only wished to save the world.

After she finished singing, her Linkage armor vanished, revealing her face for the first time in centuries, and she fell unconscious to the floor. With nothing more left to do, Lyner's group took Shurelia with them and began climbing down the Tower.

When they arrived back in Platina, and explained the situation to Leard he was shocked that things ended in that way, but he also was happy that the world wouldn't need an absolute administrator again, since these were Shurelia's wishes. Then everyone said their farewells and followed their own paths...

Some months later, Shurelia was reawakened thanks to Aurica's singing of the Re-Nation hymn, which also restarted the Tower. Shurelia was initially angered because her awakening meant Mir would reawaken as well; however, after she heard Lyner's reasoning, she decided to travel with him not only to find a better solution than sleeping for eternity, but also to be able to feel the world again.

Upon returning to Platina, they found it in turmoil because Ayatane had taken over the Crescent Chronicle and stopped Misha's singing of the Chronicle Key. Lyner and the others rushed to the Crescent Chronicle, but by then, Mir had already reawakened, so they returned to Platina to plan their strategy. Shurelia estimated that Mir had recovered around half of her power and told Leard that their only chance now was destroying Mir's body. They went to Tastiella and asked her to open the Crescent Chronicle to confront Mir, however Tastiella wanted to know the reason why Lyner wanted to fight and asked him this question: "What's the simplest, yet strongest reason that begets conflict?". Shurelia said that they didn't have time for riddles, but Lyner accepted Tastiella's challenge and her suggestion to travel around the world to seek the answer.

First, they went to the Elemia Temple in the Falcon's Claw, where Shurelia explained to them about the temples that the Trio of Elemia had dedicated to them in the past, and how Mir was once worshipped in them as well, despite the cruel treatment she had received. Then they went to the fallen Hexagonal Plate to search for some answers that were hidden in Bourd's experiment files, where Shurelia herself explained about the experiments thatw ere performed on Mir to erase her emotions.

They continued on to the Observatory to ask Meimei about Ayatane's whereabouts, and Shurelia was shocked when Meimei told them he was inside the Plasma Bell, and planned to destroy it, because without the Bell, the Wings of Horus would be sent plummeting down into the Sea of Death. Once more, they rushed to stop Ayatane.

At this point, Shurelia began to reopen her heart to the people and show her feelings, revealing that because of all that had transpired during the last 700 years she had led a very hard life, and her immortality was also a very big burden for her. She also showed to Lyner some of the lost technology of the Tower, including writing a mock Cosmosphere for herself inside the Binary Field to serve as a virtual playground for the both of them.

In the Plasma Bell, Shurelia told them the only thing they could do was stop the guardian of the Bell, the Child of Light, since Ayatane had already finished overwriting her programming with new orders: destroy the Plasma Bell. However, once they had defeated her, the Child of Light restored herself and gained more power, and just when they were going to be annihilated, Ayatane came in and shut her down. After a brief exchange of words, Ayatane joined the group, and they returned to the Elemia Church to plan their strategy. Shurelia warned everyone about the dangers of their next destination: the Silver Horn, because of the powerful Symphonic Power barrier that was protecting it: the Voice of God. She told everyone how this powerful energy barrier could literally vaporize a person that was too weak, but reassured them that with their current strength they wouldn't suffer that kind of fate.

After crossing the Horn and arriving to the room where Mir was kept imprisoned up to the time of her rebellion, Shurela recognized the place as the workshop where she used to make songs before Mir's birth. Then, after obtaining and downloading the song they came to search in this place, they went to the Crescent Chronicle for the final battle with Mir. Shurelia was very sad after learning about all what that caused Mir to become like this, and told Lyner to help console her.

After the final battle, Shurelia suggested to make a song with the intent of giving eternal peace to the world, and then, they began traveling around all of Sol Ciel to gather the feelings of the people. She ended getting lost yet again in the Observatory when they asked Meimei about their feelings. Then, the next day, she, Aurica and Misha went up to the Rinkernator, and began singing the song they had crafted, their prayers for eternal peace: Phantasmagoria.

After that, she decided to stay beside Lyner, and to be beside him as much as the time would allow them to...

Misha's Path[]

When Lyner finally returns with the Purger in his hands, Shurelia is containing ELMA-DS with the help of Ayatane and some other knights, but they retreat so Lyner and his party can take care of the virus. During the battle the virus breaks into Misha's mind, and Shurelia suggests that the entire party Dive to save her. Some of the candidates were Ayatane, Krusche and Lyner; Ayatane turned down the offer, since he wanted to continue protecting Shurelia, but Krusche, on the other hand agreed. Lyner also accepted, since he had promised Misha that he would help her.

Shurelia isn't seen again until after the Holy War incident. After all of that, Lyner and all of his friends reunited in the Platina Grand Hall where Shurelia thanked them for their brave efforts in saving Platina and recovering the Chronicle Key, but then she tripped and fell. Confronted with concern, she told everyone that she was only tired and needed to rest, then returned to the Rinkernator, her place of residence as the Administrator of the Tower.

Some months later, Shurelia was reawakened thanks to Aurica's singing of the Re=Nation hymn, which also restarted the Tower. However, after she heard Lyner's reasons for these actions, she ended traveling with him because she wanted not only to find a better solution for everyone, but also to be able to feel the world again.

Battle[]

Main article: Shurelia (boss)

Shurelia is fought during the time she is being possessed by Mir, and given her position as Administrator of the Tower, this means that the player will have a rather hard fight, given her access to party-wide attacks and that she can also use the Ar tonelico Song Magic against the party.

Role in Ar tonelico II: Melody of Metafalica[]

Leila

Shurelia as Leila

Shurelia first appeared near the end of the game, when Jakuri contacted her through Raki and the Binary Field of the Second Tower, seeking help for hacking the security systems of Sol Marta to gain access to its deepest area: the Ar Ciel Sphere, and defeat the usurper Goddess that was being a hindrance to the singing of Metafalica.

She also appeared in Frelia's Cosmosphere as one of the spies of the syndicate, appearing first as a communicator robot for Kuroaki, and later on, showing her true form: a spy with the mission of locating and eliminating Miu. Shurelia later on scolds and calls Mir a cheater because she hacked the Cosmosphere's program to summon her virus monster form during a battle against her, but Mir simply shrugged it off, and defeated her.

At the end of the Cosmosphere, she, together with Misha and Aurica, congratulates Croix for clearing the Cosmosphere, and give their services to him and Jakuri in the form of the Dual Song Phantasmagoria, in which the three of them sing EXEC_PHANTASMAGORIA/. to amplify the power of Jakuri's Ar tonelico Song Magic.

An imitation of Shurelia singing Primal Word also appears whenever Jakuri sings her Cursing Aide Song Magic, in which a super-deform figure resembling her appears, and whenever she tries launching the song, she trips down and throws it at the party instead, increasing their chances to deal critical hits to the enemies.

Shurelia's Hymns and Costumes[]

Hymns[]

EXEC_SUSPEND/. - Puts the entire Tower in standby mode, putting also the Administrator (Shurelia herself) in a cold sleep state.

EXEC_PHANTASMAGORIA/. - (together with Misha and Aurica) - Makes peace between all the living beings in Sol Ciel, though it is more like a prayer for peace.

EXEC_DISHADOW_includes.Ex_VANISLAND/. - Sung alongside Jacqli upon her return from Metafalss to absorb the remnants of the negative feelings that still resided within the Tower from Jacqli's time as Mir.

Costumes[]

Note: Shurelia has these costumes, but they (with the exception of Linkage) aren't useable in the game. They can only be seen in her Cosmosphere, and in the extras menu of the game.

Trivia[]

Shureliaxedge

Shurelia in Cross Edge

  • Because of being the very first Reyvateil created, Shurelia has installed a prototype version of the D-Cellophane called the HD-Cellophane. It's different in the fact that its functions are all completely predeterminated and unmodifiable, which means that Shurelia's body will never change its current appearance or shape. This also carries the unfortunate implications that her personality is completely static, being the cause of her having the same exact personality she had 700 years ago.
  • Her Linkage armor serves as an special equipment designed to enhance her connection to the Tower, to the point of even allowing her to know instantly how damaged a section of the Tower or the Binary Field is without having to check it in person.
  • Her synchronization rate with Ar tonelico is only of a 10%, because the connections that were necessary for completing her and allowing her to reach max synchronization were never completed, and the technology for doing this was lost during the Grathnode Inferia. Likewise, while she theoretically can exert any kind of control over any of the SH Servers, in practice she can't do it due to lacking the appropriate knowledge for doing so: this is because Frelia's SH Server and β-6D were added to Ar tonelico after her training as Tower Administrator had concluded, and there was no one who could teach her after the Grathnode Inferia took place.
  • Shurelia plays a role in the crossover game Cross Edge, appearing alongside Lyner Barsett, Ayatane Michitaka, Aurica Nestmile, Misha Arsellec Lune and Bourd Rade. She is a magic user who can materialize her song magic to use in battle. However, due to injuries she sustains in the game's first layer, she is unplayable until the party arrives in the third layer.
  • She is notorious for being a compulsive liar about her age: when Lyner asks her, she replies by saying that she is over a thousand years old, while in the Toukousphere, she never ceases claiming she is just 16 years old, and gets angry whenever someone comes and contradicts said statement. This has become such a common behavior on her that the other characters (and some of the users that come to the Ar Portal) have begun nicknaming her the Self-proclaimed 16 year old.
  • She has absolutely no sense of direction, resulting in her getting lost extremely easily. This is caused due to a bug she has on her program, making her unable to recognize the maps and layouts of the Tower whenever she isn't wearing her Linkage (similar to a GPS terminal unable to process a GPS signal). Said bug was caused due to a failed update that was performed on her, which was supposed to correct some of the flaws she initially had, and currently, there is no technology that can patch that bug up. Her terrible sense ornate direction is played up for laughs in Cross Edge.
    036

Shurelia as she appears in Ar nosurge.

  • She appears as her child self in Ar nosurge due to the protagonists being sent to Ar Ciel's past from their homeworld of Ra Ciela.
  • She is quite good in cooking as shown when she made Lyner a food item called a [Bunny rice].  But she has also made some odd food items such as the [Foodjuice] and the casserole that she based from the one she made Lyner in the virtual world. (He described the food as "gooey", which made her burst into tears due to disappointment).
  • She has the habit of repeating certain words in a childish way, but only after she became closer to Lyner.
  • So far she is the oldest living being on Ar Ciel.
  • Her name in her virtual world and her manifestation as a spy in Frelia's cosmosphere is Leila.
  • Due to her shy and indirect nature, she has trouble conveying her true feelings. However, she is not shy about using her position of authority to get her way. (Example, her so-called "secret investigation" of Song Stone Park involving Administrators and Knights of Elemia was just her way of asking Lyner on a date).
  • She gives Lyner a warning of revoking his knighthood when she falls unconscious in battle.
  • Her install point is located at her back right above the buttocks.
  • She is the inventor of grathmelding, but never actually created anything with it until she met Lyner.
  • Her song magic is so powerful it often causes her to fall flat on her face after activation.
  • She is especially fond of bunnies, and thus creates various items in their image (food, dolls, healing items, and even bombs).
